Staff and students at St. Raymond Elementary School participated in a dress down for Moebius Syndrome Awareness Day on Friday, January 23, 2026. Fourth Grader Luis Velazquez Jr. was born with Moebius Syndrome, a rare neurological condition that can affect several cranial nerves, particularly those that control the muscles of the face. The absence of these nerves leads to the characteristic facial paralysis and other symptoms of Moebius Syndrome, named after Dr. Paul Julius Moebius, who first reported the condition in 1888. Those interested in participating wore purple, the color associated with Moebius Syndrome. Together, our school family raised $1,040 for the Moebius Syndrome Foundation. Luis’s class celebrated with his friends speaking about their affection for him and — with purple cupcakes.
There are four videos about the day's event. Luis's fellow students spoke about what Moebius Syndrome Awareness Day means to them and also about what Luis means to them. Click here for the first one. Click here for the second one. Click here for the third one and click here for the final one.
