A bit of ancient Egypt came to St. Raymond Elementary School on October 23, 2019 when 6th Graders had the chance to learn about mummification and burial practices, the Pyramids and other ancient monuments, hieroglyphics and many other topics in Mummies and More: Discovering Ancient Egypt!, a special in-school workshop that was sponsored by a school benefactor. The program was created and taught by Harvard-trained museum educator and archaeologist, Marisa Horowitz-Jaffe, founder of Museums with Marisa. The study of ancient civilizations is part of the 6th Grade curriculum. In the first part of the program, Ms. Horowitz-Jaffe discussed many world-renowned ancient Egyptian images, structures and art in a slide presentation.
In the second part of the program, students had the opportunity to touch and interact with authentic 2,500-year-old ancient artifacts. They also learned how to write their names in hieroglyphics inside a cartouche on actual Egyptian papyrus; dress like an Egyptian; have their photos taken as a mummy; and peruse a wide array of age-appropriate books on Egyptology. The workshop was given four times, one for each 6th Grade class.
